St. Louis went from having 50 factories in 1905 to over 200 factories in 1935. War factories sprung up throughout St. Louis. Monsanto changed entirely to war production. Aircraft companies, explosive manufacturers, and several other factories and manufacturers created jobs for St. Louis residents. After WWI, the brewing industry in St. Louis suffered greatly during Prohibition. However, the diverse nature of St. Louis' economy caused the city to remain on it's feet.
