St. Louis' Inception
St. Louis was established in 1764 by Pierre Laclede and his stepson. Laclede, partner of a fur trade company in New Orleans, travelled up the Mississippi in search of a new trading post. St. Louis, being located near the junctions of the Missouri, Illinois, and Mississippi rivers was the perfect location. St. Louis is named after King Louis the 9th of France.
The early settlement contained two granaries, a bakery, a maple sugar works, and a church. Supplies were brought to St. Louis by boat.
