The Civil War
Although there were no battles in St. Louis, the city was directly effected by the Civil War. Traffic on the Mississippi from the South came to a halt. This had a huge negative impact on the local economy, as it was almost entirely based on river commerce and trade. St. Louis remained under Union control during the war, and received several refugees from the South during and immediately after the war.
